Summer is all about sunshine, beach days, and that warm golden glow—but don’t let seasonal skincare myths sabotage your skin. As a cosmetic dermatologist, I see patients every year with preventable sun damage, breakouts, and irritation caused by well-meaning (but flawed) summer habits. Let’s clear the air on some of the most common summer skin care myths so you can enjoy the season with your skin glowing in the *right* way.
Truth: Up to 80% of UV rays can penetrate clouds. Even on overcast days, UVA rays (the ones that age your skin) are still out in full force. Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen is a must, rain or shine.
Pro tip: Choose a mineral SPF with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide for gentle, effective protection. If using a chemical based sunscreen then it needs to be applied 20 minutes before sun exposure.
Truth: Makeup with SPF is not enough. You’d need to apply it extremely thick to get the labeled protection, and most people don’t. Always apply a dedicated sunscreen underneath your makeup.
Bonus: Carry a powder SPF or mist for easy reapplication throughout the day.
Truth: Even if your skin feels oilier in the heat, skipping moisturizer can dehydrate your skin and lead to *more* oil production. Opt for lightweight, gel-based or oil-free moisturizers to keep your skin balanced.
Truth: While sun exposure can temporarily dry out pimples, it ultimately leads to clogged pores, rebound breakouts, and long-term damage. Plus, acne scars and pigmentation can darken with sun.
Instead: Use non-comedogenic products and ask your dermatologist about summer-safe acne treatments like light chemical peels and extractions.
Truth: Sunscreen wears off due to sweat, swimming, and natural skin oils—especially during hot summer days. To maintain protection, you need to reapply every 2 hours and immediately after swimming or sweating.
Tip: Keep a travel-size SPF in your bag for easy reapplication, and don’t forget your ears, neck, and hands.
Truth: There is no such thing as a protective or safe tan. A base tan offers the equivalent of SPF 3 or less—nowhere near adequate sun protection. In fact, developing a base tan means your skin has already been damaged by UV exposure.
Better option: Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ daily and use sunless tanners if you want a glow without the damage.
