As a board-certified dermatologist, one of the most common conversations I have with patients involves neurotoxins—better known by their brand names like Botox®, Dysport®, Xeomin®, Daxxify® Letybo®. These treatments are incredibly effective for softening lines and preventing deeper wrinkles, but they’re also surrounded by a lot of myths. Let’s set the record straight.
Truth: My goal as your dermatologist is not to erase your natural expressions. When injected properly, neurotoxins relax the muscles just enough to smooth fine lines while preserving your ability to smile, laugh, and look like yourself. “Frozen face” happens when treatments are overdone—not when they’re customized by a skilled injector.
Truth: Neurotoxins are completely optional. If you decide to stop, your muscles simply return to their natural activity, and your lines will gradually return to how they would have looked without treatment. You won’t “age faster” or look worse—though many people love their results enough to keep up with maintenance.
Truth: These treatments have been FDA-approved and extensively studied for both cosmetic and medical use (such as migraines, muscle spasms, and excessive sweating) for decades. The doses used for wrinkle treatment are tiny compared to what’s used medically, and when performed by a trained physician, they are very safe.
Truth: More and more men are choosing neurotoxins—sometimes called “Brotox”—to look refreshed and maintain a competitive edge in the workplace. Treatment is tailored differently for men and women, but the desire to look rested and confident is universal.
Truth: Neurotoxins are about enhancing your natural features, not changing them. A light touch can make you look more relaxed, less tired, and even prevent deeper lines from forming. When combined with good skincare and sun protection, it’s one of the most natural-looking anti-aging tools available.
Truth: Unlike fillers, which provide immediate volume, neurotoxins take a little time. Most people see results within 3–7 days, with the full effect at about two weeks. Plan ahead if you want to look your best for a wedding, vacation, or big event.
Neurotoxins are one of my favorite tools because they’re versatile, safe, and customizable. Whether you’re interested in prevention in your 20s, softening lines in your 30s and 40s, or refreshing your look later in life, the key is personalized treatment by a trained medical professional.
Remember: Looking natural, confident, and refreshed—not “frozen”—is always the goal.
